Old owners looking for their boats………

The Flying Fifteen Association NSW has had enquiries from two former F15 sailors from the 1960’s as to what has become of their old boats.

Ian Downing who sailed FF 633 “Bookiera”, to success at State and National level is keen to know what happened to his old boat. The Class had it’s last record of it in 1984/5 when it was owned by a Mr G Steinhunt sailed at Greenwich Sailing Club on Sydney Harbour.

The other query can from David Sinclair who wonders what became of his Flying Fifteen FF 619 “Schuss” and may now be know as “Moy”. This boat was unusual for a Flying Fifteen as it was fitted with a cuddy. It was a glass fibre boat with a cuddy built by David Hinkley, sails by Peter Cole. The hull was light blue, the deck white with grey insets on the cuddy. David commissioned FF619 in or around 1965 and successfully raced it with the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club.

Attached is a photo of the FF 619 “Schuss” supplied by David, sailing off Darling Point, Sydney sometime in 1966. The boat in the background is FF 572 “Molly O IV” that won the Australian Championship in 1964.

The F15 Association of NSW is keen to hear from anyone with old Flying Fifteens that may be interested in sailing them or taking part in a One Class event sailing against other Flying Fifteens.

Boats back in the water…..

Two boats have recently got back in the water in the Taree area. Neil Williams from Coolongolook has refurbished FF 1193 “Dionysus” and Jim Barbour from Cundletown had bought FF 2821 “Sliante Mhath” from Andrew Rennie. Attached photo shows FF 2821 as Jim picked it up FF 1717 is in the background.

Neil tells me that the local yacht club has an annual event that runs for about 16 Nm, he came second in the Division that he was put in last year. If we could get a few more boats we could run as a Class in this event. More details to follow……..

Congratulations to a new NSW Flying Fifteen sailor who has refurbished his boat and got it back on the water.

Dave Smith of Hunters Hill in Sydney has just sorted FF 2350 “Sandpiper” this is a classic F15, with a white hull and blue deck constructed in fibreglass. Andrew Rennie was able to supply him with templates of missing parts and “Sandpiper” is once again racing on Sydney Harbour.

A Site for F15 sailors in NSW

This is a site that provides information to owners of Flying Fifteens in NSW. In the 2006/7 sailing season the Flying Fifteen International in NSW was granted Affiliation and Class Member Status of Yachting NSW. If you have a F15 in NSW and want to become a member please contact the State Secretary for application forms and other documentation.

There are a number of benefits in being a member. On a State level being a member can put you in touch with other owners in your area and start to provide you with F15 on F15 racing. The full membership of the Flying Fifteen International Australian Association allows members to compete in other States and at the National Championship also the World Titles (depending on qualifying)

On this site you will find an outline of the history of Flying Fifteens in NSW and past champions. There are also links to sites that may help the NSW F15 sailor in the restoration or upgrading of his or her F15.
